An introduction to mixed media from Valerie:
I am going to begin work on a series of starts, taking them as far as feels right. To begin I am planning to create a stash of coloured and textured papers ready to tear and to cut up for the collage elements of my work. I shall also be working on background beginnings using gesso, moulding paste, collage texts, textures, and playful markmaking. At this stage it is all play and anything can happen and emerge. It is a matter of shutting off the structured logical brain and looking for the child within.

I dream of sacred places
Valerie Armstrong on her new series of mixed media paintings:
My latest, more abstract work explores the intangibility and ephemeral nature of the mysterious world we enter when in sleep… I always paint with music as my muse, combining collage, words and textures, obscuring then working back, so barely visible traces can be glimpsed through layers of transparent glaze.
