Ruth works with translucent layers of watercolour pigment to build up abstract interpretations of the landscape. Living in East Suffolk she has chosen pieces which show the impact of light on the agricultural and coastal formations so typical of this region.

Within the collection there are also pieces which have emerged following a residency in North Wales in 2015, where the massive land forms around her, and the places where industry made its impact set a different challenge. In particular she spent time exploring a disused slate quarry, watching the light as it moved across man-made rock faces and forms. It was a place of great presence, bringing to mind thoughts of the violence which had removed rock from the mountain, juxtaposed against the beauty of colour, and colonisation of plant life since work stopped. There were even tadpoles in August in the shallow pools.
