Jenny Goater : Wire Creations

Jenny says of her work: I find that using wire translates the drawn line into an exciting three dimensional medium. I derived the technique from armatures constructed to support works in clay or plaster. Wire gives the freedom of drawing in space, and its shapes can suggest dynamic movement or static volume and weight. Read more about Jenny Goater‘s work.

Watch Jenny Goater at work creating her impressive wire sculptures in the gallery today, from 10.15 am – 4.30 pm.

Artworks press release & exhibition news 2013

Don’t miss this year’s Artworks annual exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn. Established in 2000, Artworks is a group of thirty professional East Anglian based artists, comprising painters, printmakers and sculptors, working in a range of styles and media.

This year’s exhibition promises to be yet another extremely diverse show, with members who also exhibit widely elsewhere, in some of the most prestigious galleries in the country. One of our most renowned members is the artist Constance Stubbs, whose innovative colourful work has become highly collectable over the years.

Here is an introduction to some of the artists who will exhibiting at Artworks 2013:

Janet French has had great success with a print accepted in this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. It is one of a series of tree portraits created in a collaborative project with another printmaker Emma Buckmaster, both of whom also jointly chair the Gainsborough’s House Printmakers group. Together they have created a unique series of portraits of native trees etched on to paper made from the trees own leaves. Janet & Emma will also be demonstrating at Art in Action.

Colin Slee was chosen to share an exhibition with the sculptor Jonathan Clark at Gainsborough’s House, a show entitled Creative Forces, which ran from March to June 2013. It was an exploration and response to their environment through contrasting practices. It was an impressive show.

Elaine Nason will be showing new prints at the Norwich Print Fair between 9th –21st September 2013, and also at the Edmund Gallery in Bury St Edmunds in mid-October 2013. Also in October she will be taking part in a group show at The Cut, Halesworth, which will show the artists’ visual responses to the building and the people who use it.

There was an unusual exhibition in an empty 16th century farmhouse in Palgrave, Norfolk earlier in the year, which included two Artworks members, Jenny Goater and Lynn Hutton. The two artists were asked to produce works inspired by the house. Jenny Goater’s created a wire sculpture of a peacock which stood on the front lawn, and another wire sculpture, ‘Aphrodite’, graced the modern shower room. Another work of a seated figure sculpted in wire sat like a ghostly presence in the bedroom. A corridor displayed Lynn Hutton’s ‘I am not a Hamlet’, a series of old photographic portraits printed on slates, and the garden hosted Lynn’s large aluminium sculpture entitled ‘In the natural order’, an impressive work which was previously exhibited at Artworks in 2010.

This year we welcome the artist Kate Reynolds as a new member of Artworks. Kate is a ceramic sculptor who makes exciting single and paired forms, some abstracted from human images, or profiles referring to iconic human images from history or other cultures, often with crackle glaze effects achieved by the Raku firing process. Kate has undertaken many large scale ceramic commissions.

Also exhibiting with Artworks for the first time are: Rachel Hutchins, a printmaker of rural scenes; Patricia Colyer a landscape painter whose work explores textural reed beds and the atmospheric skies; and Jan Dingle, a printmaker whose work records the changing face of the Norfolk Broadland and other watery landscapes.

Artworks 14th annual exhibition is open from 7th to 29th September 2013 at Blackthorpe Barn, Rougham, Bury St Edmunds IP30 9HZ. Open daily 10am – 5pm. We hope to see you there!
