Artworks News: Artworks 2020

A Message from our Chair, Gillian Crossley-Holland:

This autumn’s Artworks exhibition 2020 has been cancelled in response to Coronavirus.

December afternoon, Thelnetham fen, by Gillian Crossley Holland

Artworks is held in September and I trust, by then, our choices will be much improved. However, so much work and planning usually goes towards our exhibition during these summer months, that we felt it would be wiser to start afresh in 2021 when, hopefully, all restrictions will have been lifted.

The cancellation of our exhibition is disappointing for all of us, but particularly so for some of this year’s guest artists who have long wanted to exhibit with the Artworks group at the venue of Blackthorpe Barn. We therefore decided that the kindest thing would be to offer all current guest artists a second year with Artworks.

I am therefore pleased to welcome: Louise Chapman, Iona Howard, Evelyn Polk and Laurie Rudling – who are all 2D artists; and Jacquelyn Hindle, Antonia Hockton and Jim Racine, who are 3D artists.

I am also pleased to welcome Zoe Rubens back for a return visit, and delighted to say that Nicola Coe is now a full member of Artworks and she is keen to make the group as ecologically sound as possible.

Helen Dougall and Janet French would have been on sabbatical in 2020, but as we are now all on sabbatical this year it might be difficult to tell.

As artists we are all still working one way or another, but without forthcoming exhibitions and deadlines, many of us are using this strange lacuna to think, reflect and experiment – and like many others – to spend a great deal of time gardening!

We will still be sharing our latest works and progress on the Artworks blog and the Artworks Instagram @ARTWORKSEAST, so please follow us.

I look forward to meeting all our visitors in 2021 when Artworks will be holding its 21st exhibition.

We invite professional artists who are established in their art practice, showing new work that will be engaging and contemporary to new audiences.

We are especially keen for contemporary fine artists and sculptors working in bronze, ceramic, stone, metal or contemporary mixed media to apply this year, to complement our collective of painters & printmakers (sculptors are under represented in our group). However, all contemporary artists are encouraged to apply, as we enjoy seeing the contemporary art of East Anglia (Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex & Cambridgeshire).

Register your interest now by going to: www.artworkseast.com/apply-membership.

With a focus on excellent administration in exhibition planning, presentation and sales of art, we are recognised as one of East Anglia’s leading art exhibitions.

There is still time to apply – the closing date for the return of application forms is 31st January 2020, with a portfolio selection day in mid February. Register your interest now by going to: www.artworkseast.com/apply-membership

ARTWORKS The final weekend: Mini Artworks Prize Draw, and more!

We have enjoyed some beautiful autumnal days while at Blackthorpe Barn, and have been warmed by the hundreds of visitors to the Artworks exhibition. Sales from the Artworks shop and exhibition have been good, which is support for our artists and for the continued success and progress of the Artworks group. We thank you all. This weekend is our final weekend!

On Saturday 5th October 2019 at 3pm, the popular Mini Artworks Prize Draw takes place. There are thirty original mini artworks to be won, so do visit us before 3pm on Saturday if you wish to buy prize draw tickets. Winners will be notified via telephone, if unable to stay for the prize draw. The Artworks Mini Artworks Prize Draw funds the schools workshops, and we also make a donation to a regional charity. This year it is Inside Out, an Ipswich based charity offering free creative arts workshops for mental health & wellbeing, run by professional artists.

Sunday 6th October 2019 is your last chance to visit Artworks: we are open from 10am, visit before 2pm to enjoy the exhibition in its entirety. Buyers of artwork can collect from 4pm on Sunday (remember to bring your purchase receipt). We have two teams to assist on the final day, on the sales desk and packing/collection of sold artworks.

If you are on Instagram, follow us @artworkseast and share your snaps of your favourite artworks with the hashtag #artworkseast. We have already seen & shared many photos!

A reminder: you can download the Artworks 20th Annual Exhibition 2019 catalogue (PDF 3.4MB).

There are only three more ‘Meet the Artists’; a chance to learn more about their art & ideas, supported by technical demos or examples of work in progress.

Friday 4th October 2019: Christine McKechnie: Watercolour painted paper collage

Saturday 5th October 2019: Alison Jones: Flower painting in watercolour and washes

Sunday 6th October 2019: Hazel Bradshaw: Lino cutting and printing
