Elisabeth Rutt

I am an artist working with textiles; the driving force in my work is form and colour, and what they will do for me. Recent work is about the patterns in our landscape, sky, and weather.

I have come to rely on hand stitching which I keep simple. My stitches are drawn marks describing what I have observed or am thinking about. I rarely use conventional ground fabrics, preferring to construct, paint or print my fabric before adding stitch. The more I sew the more I want to simplify the construction of the stitches I use, wanting the work to speak for itself, the design to be the best it can be and the techniques I am using to be secondary.
