ARTWORKS: Julia Groves and the alchemy of pigments

This year my continuing journey into the alchemy of pigments and paint making has led me to explore metal leaf.

I found learning how to do this more physical activity, than some of my detailed botanical work, was easier for me to engage with as it required a different kind of focus during lockdown.

The preciousness and impermanence of this human life were in my thoughts whilst making this work

These new paintings delve once again into the worlds of the rose and the poppy, with a focus on formal and symbolic qualities of light and shadows.

The pieces also have an ever-changing movement which is created as light plays with the lustre of the metal surface.

Artworks News: Artworks celebrates its 20th year in 2019

In 2019 we say a fond farewell to Doug Patterson and Liz Waugh McManus, both of whom have been working on international projects.

We welcome back Jazz Green who took sabbatical from Artworks in 2018. Anne Paton and Elaine Nason are taking a year out in 2019.

Hazel Bradshaw and Julia Groves are now full members of Artworks. They join Chris Hann and Sue Caddy who became members in 2017.

At the beginning of each year, we invite professional artists (by open call, more details here) to join us as guest exhibiting artists. This year we welcome back last year’s guest artists Nicola Coe, Elizabeth Cooke, Fiona Fawcett and Zoe Rubens, joined by two new guest artists Judith Glover and Corrin Tulk.

With much new art to share, we hope you will visit in 2019. If you would like to attend the exclusive preview evening on Friday 20th September 2019, please contact us via the CONTACT page.
