Most things, whether still life or landscape, have some sort of personal resonance, evoking different feelings and memories in each of us. Primarily I want to honour the things that I am painting. However mundane they may seem, they absorb and inspire me and I try to give them an opportunity to speak and be valued.
Landscape and still life inform each other both technically, compositionally in my work. The way I approach sill life – simply and directly – has been influenced by the uncomplicated East Anglian landscape where the horizon is ever-present and everything is laid out in front of you. Being Project Artist during the building of the Tower at St Edmundsbury Cathedral also led me to inspect things at close range!
My work is not immediate – as a watercolour artist working in a particular style, there’s a lot of planning especially in my still life work. I use a restricted palette and work on a painting as a whole, gradually building up tone and colour and moving from large washes to more detail until I achieve the expressive and sculptural qualities that I’m searching for.
