Joe Pattison

My work explores the human condition by taking a sideways step from reality. Inspiration can range from a simple phrase or saying to a personal incident. I like juxtaposing and combining materials and ideas to give my pieces an unsettling edge or to challenge a belief. Although I am in general control of where and how the work will look, serendipity plays its own part, always with surprising results. The whole story is for the viewer to interpret for themselves.

Biography
I completed a two year Pre-diploma course at Burslem School of Art in Stoke on Trent, then a three year course in Architectural Ceramics at Nottingham College of Art, during which time, in around 1970, I made my first surreal sculptures. After graduating I started working as a modeller in Muggins Pottery in Leicestershire before moving to Clarecraft Designs in Suffolk as a designer and Pottery manager. Clarecraft also manufactured in resin and plasterware. This experience enabled me to set up as a freelance sculptor, working for many large and small  giftware companies in the UK modelling figurines (including the Clarecraft Discworld figures), cottages, fragrant plasterware, models for ceramics, plaques, dolls, fridge magnets and walking stick handles. After the downturn in UK manufacturing I taught myself the art of traditional pargeting (decorative freehand modelling in lime plaster), which I practised for many years all over the UK. During this period I also designed and produced many village signs, mainly in East Anglia and surrounding counties. After retirement I took the opportunity to return to my surreal sculpting, taking up the reins where I had left off all those years before.
