Ten Artworks artists in Ad Libitum Art Exhibition

More exhibition news on the Artworks blog!

Ten Artworks artists (past & present) have paintings currently on show at the stunning venue, The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds this November. The exhibition is called Ad Libitum, in reference to artists having a ‘free hand’ in their work.

All the work in the exhibition is new to Artworks, having not been exhibited in any previous Artworks exhibitions. The light & space of the upstairs gallery is a wonderful backdrop to everyone’s work – we hope you will visit if you are in the area!

The nine Artworks artists featured in this show are: Mike Ashley, Gillian Crossley-Holland, Helen Dougall, Helen Du Feu, Janet French, Jazz Green, Eleonora Knowland, Marianne Koby-Johnson, Katie Millard and Gabrielle Stoddart.

Some exhibition photographs will be posted shortly. The exhibition, Ad Libitum, runs from 29th October to 28th November 2012 (full details below).

Welcome back to the Artworks shop!

A few words from Gillian Crossley-Holland, a founder member of Artworks, who oversees and organises the Artworks shop each year. Please note: This text refers to the Artworks exhibition & shop in 2012:
It is our thirteenth exhibition and I think this is one of our best shows ever. The main barn looks very striking with the three dimensional work displayed on tall plinths which flow back the length of the barn – including Carol Pask’s bold ceramic works, Lizzie Saunder’s intriguing geometric shapes, Genista Dunham’s large and exciting papier mache bowls, the beautiful glass work of Virginia Wright, not forgetting Jenny Goater’s successful wire sculptures (also a founder member of Artworks). There is, of course, all the wonderful paintings on the walls, in every 2D media, from traditional oils to mixed media collage and acrylics.
Our Private View evening was great, with lots of familiar faces but also a number of new people visiting, a real buzz, and many sales of artwork, large and small. Meanwhile, it was back to Blackthorpe barn very early the next morning to meet the Shop Team and set up the Artworks shop & cafe.
Having finished getting the shop ready with the walls, tables and browsers filled up with artists work, I always feel I should have a little treat to celebrate – something lovely from the main exhibition or the Artworks shop, even if it’s just a few artists cards.
Papier mache bowls by Jazz Green
Last year it was a papier mache bowl by Jazz Green, tender and golden, and a wonderful print by Ben Quail.
This year it was another papier mache bowl (I have a collection) by Genista Dunham – it is so merry and colourful.

The shop is now beautifully set up and running alongside the main Artworks exhibition, and as always, there is a wonderful range of artworks and cards to browse and buy.

I love looking round my home and seeing various artworks I have bought and remembering their makers and all the wonderful artists I’ve worked alongside these last thirteen years with Artworks.

A virtual visit to the Artworks Shop!

Welcome back to the Artworks blog! Today, we thought it would be a lovely idea to give our visitors a virtual tour (or taste!) of the small delights in the Artworks Shop!

The Artworks Shop is always a favourite destination for people visiting the main Artworks exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn. All the art currently on display in the Artworks Shop is available for immediate purchase.

Browsers containing original prints, paintings and drawings

One of the most exciting things to do is to riffle through the browsers (shown above) and discover a small work by one of your favourite artists in the main exhibition! Many of these unframed works come straight from the artists’ studios and may have not been exhibited (or even seen!) before.

We are happy to offer some advice on framing should you require it (just ask at the sales desk). Recently discovered in one of the browsers is this charming original linocut print by Elaine Nason, ‘Woman bathing‘.

All the artworks on display on the walls of the Artworks Shop can also be purchased and taken away immediately. Why not treat yourself or a loved one to an original, framed work of art at an affordable price.

Works by Lynn Hutton, Valerie Armstrong, Gill Levin, Gillian Crossley-Holland & Ben Quail

In addition to the many works on paper and small framed paintings for sale, there are also some delightful sculptural pieces offered by the artists Jazz Green, Carol Pask and Virginia Wright.

Jazz Green’s intriguing papier mache vessels (shown below) have the appearance of ancient stone relics, the pleasing combination of light blue ceramic and grey stone or slate in Carol Pask’s assemblages evoke the colours of the coast and the free-standing glass works by Virginia Wright in translucent greys and browns conjure up walks in the woods.

As usual, there is also a fabulous range of original greetings cards for sale, many of which are printed in small runs and are not available to purchase elsewhere. Shown below are the very popular cards by printmaker Penny Bhadresa.

Highly recommended are Katie Millard’s & Eileen Revett’s unique range of artist cards. Katie’s are original watercolour paintings and Eileen’s are handmade woodcut prints, with both ranges perfect for framing to hang on your wall!
Janet French’s cards feature one of her environmental tree prints, as illustrated below.
Helen Dougall’s colourful collection of cards include her stunning wax batik designs but much reduced in scale. In the Artworks Shop you will discover we have greetings cards to suit all tastes and occasions!
We hope you will enjoy the many delightful works of art on offer in the Artworks shop. The wall display changes as sold works are replaced with new works for sale.

Something worth a closer look is Lynn Hutton’s exquisite porcelain relief sculpture, ‘When Eve met the serpent‘ (shown above and below).

All in all, the Artworks Shop is a most tempting addition to the art in the main Artworks exhibition.
So, we welcome your visit to the Artworks Shop!
